ਪਹਿਲਾ ਪਾਠ

     ਗਿਣਤੀ 21:4-9

  
   ⁴ ਉਹ ਪਹਾੜ ਹੋਰ ਤੋਂ ਲਾਲ ਸਾਗਰ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਥਾਣੀ ਅਦੋਮ ਦੇ ਉੱਤੋਂ ਦੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਵਧੇ। ਪਰ ਲੋਕ ਇਸ ਲੰਮੇ ਸਫਰ ਤੋਂ ਅੱਕ ਗਏ।
   ⁵ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅਤੇ ਮੂਸਾ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਇਹ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਬੁੜਬੁੜਾਉਣ ਲੱਗੇ, “ਤੂੰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਮਿਸਰ ਤੋਂ ਕੱਢ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਉਜਾੜ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਰਨ ਲਈ ਕਿਉਂ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ। ਇੱਥੇ ਨਾ ਤਾਂ ਖਾਣ ਲਈ ਭੋਜਨ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਪੀਣ ਲਈ ਪਾਣੀ ਹੈ।”
   ⁶ ਤਦ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚਕਾਰ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਭਰੇ ਸੱਪ ਘੱਲੇ, ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੱਟਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਇਸਰਾਈਲੀ ਮਰ ਗਏ।
   ⁷ ਇਹ ਹੋਣ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਲੋਕ ਮੂਸਾ ਕੋਲ ਆਏ ਅਤੇ ਬੋਲੇ, “ਅਸੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਪਾਪ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਤੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅੱਗੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਕਰ, ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸਾਡੇ ਵਿੱਚਕਾਰੋਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸੱਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਟਾ ਦੇਵੇ।”
   ⁸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮੂਸਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਤੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਸੱਪ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ, ਇੱਕ ਵੰਝ ਉੱਤੇ ਟੰਗ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਕਰ ਦੇਹ। ਜੋ ਸੱਪ ਦਾ ਕੱਟਿਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਤੇਰੇ ਬਣਾਏ ਇਸ ਸੱਪ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖੇਗਾ, ਉਹ ਬਚ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।”
   ⁹ ਸੋ ਮੂਸਾ ਨੇ ਕੈਂਹੇ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਸੱਪ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਵੰਝ ਤੇ ਟੰਗ ਕੇ ਇੱਕ ਥਾਂ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੀ, ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਸੱਪ ਨੇ ਕੱਟਿਆ ਸੀ, ਉਸ ਸੱਪ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਸੀ, ਉਹ ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ।

 

     ਜ਼ਬੂਰ 102:2-3, 16-18, 19-21 (A-273)

  
   ਮੇਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ, ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਨਾ ਲੁਕਾ, ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੱਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਨ ਲਾ; ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪੁਕਾਰਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉੱਤਰ ਦੇਹ।

 

     ਜੈਕਾਰਾ (ਯੂਹੰਨਾਹ 8:12)

 

ਐ ਮਸੀਹ, ਸਦੀਵੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇ ਰਾਜਾ, ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਉਸਤਤ ਹੋਵੇ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, ਮੈਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਹਾਂ। ਜੋ ਮੇਰੀ ਪੈਰਵੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ। ਐ ਮਸੀਹ, ਸਦੀਵੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇ ਰਾਜਾ, ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਉਸਤਤ ਹੋਵੇ!

 

 

     ਅੰਜੀਲ

     ਯੂਹੰਨਾਹ 8:21-30

  
   ²¹ ਉਸਨੇ ਫਿਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਭੋਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਰੋਗੇ। ਜਿੱਥੇ ਮੈਂ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉੱਥੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੇ।”
   ²² ਤਦ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਕੀ ਇਹ ਖੁਦਕੁਸ਼ੀ ਤਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰੇਗਾ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ‘ਜਿੱਥੇ ਮੈਂ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉੱਥੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੇ’?”
   ²³ ਉਸਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੋ, ਮੈਂ ਉੱਪਰ ਦਾ ਹਾਂ; ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਹੋ, ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਂ।
   ²⁴ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਰੋਗੇ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਉਹ ਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਰੋਗੇ।”
   ²⁵ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੌਣ ਹੋ?” ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਉਹੋ, ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ-ਬਾਤ ਹੀ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ?
   ²⁶ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਕੁਝ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਕੁਝ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਦੇਣਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਜਿਸਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਘੱਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਅੱਗੇ ਐਲਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।”
   ²⁷ ਉਹ ਨਾ ਸਮਝੇ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਪ ਦੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
   ²⁸ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਪਰ ਉਠਾਓਗੇ, ਤਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਜਾਓਗੇ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਸਗੋਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੋ ਬਾਪ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਿਖਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
   ²⁹ ਜਿਸਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਘੱਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ; ਉਸਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਲਿਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਿਆ ਹੈ। ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਉਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੋ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਮਨਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।”
   ³⁰ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਇਮਾਨ ਲਿਆਂਦਾ।  

     First Reading   

     Nm 21:4-9

  
   ⁴ From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the people became impatient on the way.
   ⁵ And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.”
   ⁶ Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.
   ⁷ And the people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
   ⁸ And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and every one who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”
   ⁹ So Moses made a bronze serpent, and set it on a pole; and if a serpent bit any man, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

 

     Psalm 102:2-3. 16-18. 19-21

  Do not hide thy face from me in the day of my distress! Incline thy ear to me; answer me speedily in the day when I call!   

     Gospel Acclamation (Jn 8:12)

 Praise to you, O Christ, king of eternal glory! says the Lord: I am the light of the world, says the Lord; anyone who follows me will have the light of life. Praise to you, O Christ, king of eternal glory!

     Jn 8:21-30

  
   ²¹ Again he said to them, “I go away, and you will seek me and die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.”
   ²² Then said the Jews, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”
   ²³ He said to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world.
   ²⁴ I told you that you would die in your sins, for you will die in your sins unless you believe that I am he.”
   ²⁵ They said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Even what I have told you from the beginning.
   ²⁶ I have much to say about you and much to judge; but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.”
   ²⁷ They did not understand that he spoke to them of the Father.
   ²⁸ So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority but speak thus as the Father taught me.
   ²⁹ And he who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him.”
   ³⁰ As he spoke thus, many believed in him.
